unhappy hipsters

yesterday, swiss miss tweeted about unhappy hipsters. i immediately fell in love. the pictures are incredible, of course [love dwell]. but it's the captions. they are spot on, hilarious.

she had this uncanny way of making him feel so, so small.

thank you, unhappy hipsters, for making my day.

why isn't it in vancouver, part II

oh, it would sure make me happy if i could swing by anthropologie on my way home from taking the kids to school. or on a rainy sunday afternoon.
or after a weekend matinee. anytime, really. i'd go there, if it would only come to vancouver. wouldn't you?

the bright spot

i'm looking for the bright spot today, nestled in my bleary surroundings.
i woke up this morning with the baby's terrible cold, which i'd managed to studiously avoid for the past 2.5 weeks. not good timing, i've got loads to do, and now all i'd like to do is sleep.
i took this picture in the small icelandic town of grindavik, not far from the fabulous blue lagoon. we weren't sure what that colourfully painted shack was for. no visible doors, just a bright spot in a bleak landscape.
perfectly suitable for today.

branch.

here are some things that caught my eye while i was browsing around at branch, one of my favourite places to window shop. i love the felt bags by josh jakus. i've mentioned his eggflat before, and i just think his stuff rocks.

a day dress for me, please

i got a little carried away last night trolling through some sweet vintage dresses on etsy. some of my faves were these fun + flirty day dresses.
love them. perfect for spring. which, if you live in vancouver, feels like it has arrived about 3 months early.

something about a leaf

we went for a walk in the woods last weekend, and i found myself strangely fascinated by dead leaves and foliage among the trees + branches. something about the way they were lying there, soaked through and breaking down, draped over a twig or another leaf. so i took some pictures.

mimi

meet mimi [as named by the babe, herself]. lovingly stitched by mama + finished at the last possible moment, the night before christmas. not yet a favourite, but she does seem to like her well enough. i think i'll have to make a matching dress for my little pixie, i just love that combo.

wee wonderfuls olive doll pattern available here. easy to follow + fun to make, i love it.
i hope to see mimi dragged all over town in the years to come.

why not write a letter

and to make it more fun, why not use some pretty printed paper, you'll be happy if you do. i love these stationery sets from the regional assembly of text, one of my favourite shops here in vancouver. their goodies are a delight to behold, have a look!

pure + simple beauty

i've mentioned here before how much i love a well-designed set of stairs. it can completely change the way a place feels. when you live in a 3-level townhouse, as i do, stairs are seemingly everywhere. i sure wish the architects of this building had had the desire to make the most of this important feature. have a look at these beautiful staircases, by johnston architects of seattle. gorgeous, no?

i will definitely be sharing more images from johnston architects in the near future. i found loads of inspiration in their online portfolio. so many beautiful designs to drool over.

while she naps, indeed

i have long been a fan of the talented abby glassenberg, of while she naps. her work is nothing short of stunning, an absolutely marvel. at once realistic and fantastical, she brings birds + beasts to life in a way i've not seen anywhere before. my very favourites are her birds. the ruffles + wings + feet. and the body language. just look at the peahen [below, centre] and her puffed out chest. perfect.

i do hope you've enjoyed my impromptu bird week here on the blog. it won't be the last you see of birds here, by any means, but in keeping with
this post, i'm going to change it up a bit next week. happy weekend, all!

geninne :: collage bird series

these beautiful prints would definitely be at home on my bird wall. love love love geninne's work. i'm especially fond of her collage bird series. i think it's just darling that the birds are all perched on vintage postcards + envelopes. so sweet, so sweet.

since we can tell i love birds...

i guess this week's posts are fleshing out a bit of a theme. rather than fight it, i'll just go along. here are a few bird prints i fell for while trolling around on etsy last night. i'm thinking i need a bird wall in my home. i know just the spot.
