a letter for you

when my friend linda from a la mode posted about project letter writing earlier this month, i was super excited to join up. i used to write letters -- a lot! i had a couple penpals as a kid, and as i grew older i developed a total obsession with paper goods and stationery. i love it all, and have got quite a good collection. when a good friend of mine lived in korea for several years, she sent me so many awesome letter-writing sets, with cute paper + envelopes, stickers, and the like. i loved them so much i couldn't bring myself to use them! i lived in tofino for 6 months when i was 20. it was an amazing place, and i made a ton of friends, but missed my friends at home. i started writing letters again, and most of my friends wrote back. it was the perfect way to stay connected. i still have all those letters, as well the ones i received from my tofino friends in the years after i left town to come back home. reading them again brings back a lot of memories, and a lot of laughter. good times!
the problem is, i don't do it anymore. why is that? email is so easy, so convenient. when i write for too long my hand gets sore, and my writing becomes messier than i'd like. i never seem to make it to the mailbox. and now i text, more than even talking on the phone, for the most part!
it's time to reconnect, and get back to this simple art.

linda sent everyone who signed up for the project a hand-picked card to use for the letter. i received this adorable card from pistachio press, which happens to be a fave shop of mine. immediately, i knew who i would write to.

done! with two days to spare before the end of january, i wrote my letter. someone mentioned, in this day of texting and facebook and twitter, she finds it hard to think of something to write that would be worthy of a letter. i had that thought at first, too, until i realized it didn't really matter what i wrote. my friend will just be super excited to read my letter, so i just sat down and wrote what came to mind at that moment.
i was also pretty excited to use some washi tape to spruce up the envelope a little. now i have a proper excuse to buy many more rolls of pretty tape!

i can't wait for my friend to get her letter. it's been years since we wrote to each other regularly, and with us living in different cities again now and for the foreseeable future, i figured it was a good time to get the ball rolling again.
my favourite part of writing this letter was actually going back and reading some of the letters we'd written to one another in the past. i even found a little something i'd almost forgotten about, enclosed in one of her letters to me. i made a copy of it and tucked it inside, and i just know she's going to love it. i got a real kick out of some of the stuff we wrote about way back then! it helped me to realize that there doesn't need to be an occasion or something "big" to write about, but just everyday anecdotes and what i like to call "stream-of-consciousness ramblings" are perfect. it's more like a conversation that way, and that's just how i like it.

when was the last time you wrote a letter? maybe you'd like to join us in project letter writing -- it's the perfect way to get started again, and everything's always easier when you do it with a friend.

seesaw.

i've got a little bit of a letterpress crush on seesaw designs right now. just saw these fresh new cards on their blog today, and i'm totally smitten. i especially love the 'hooray for you', those yellow circles are perfection.

i am also coveting one of the 2011 calendars. love the amazing textural patterns paired with metallic ink. brilliant. if i don't win one in their giveaway, i do think i'll be treating myself to an early christmas gift. head on over here to enter. or maybe not, it'll lessen my chances!

on gratitude, community, and letterpress

on friday afternoon, the mailman knocked at my door, handing me a few packages. i order loads of stuff online, so this is nothing out of the ordinary, though much anticipated. after looking through a couple padded envelopes [more fabric, yippee!], i saw a small box, the return address reading simplesong design. hmm. i wracked my brain, wondering if there was any way i could have forgotten ordering something from one of my very favourite letterpress shops. surely, i would remember that, wouldn't i? and so, mystery intact, i opened the box. what i saw just floored me.
truth be told, tears pricked my eyes as a smile spread wide across my face.
this is what i saw inside.

and this is why.

i can't remember exactly how i was first introduced to molly. it must have been several months ago now, on twitter, or perhaps through her delightful blog. i was instantly hooked after reading charlotte's fancy the first time. molly has such a beautiful style of writing. clear + concise, informative yet light, familiar, friendly, and just plain lovely. she shares just the right balance of crafts, art, handmade finds, and her own family. molly has been kind enough to share some of my goodies with her readers, and i truly appreciate that. i love seeing what her newest finds are, and delight in the fabulous art + handmade kids' items she discovers. she has introduced me to many new favourites, and may have caused a couple new obsessions [wink].
molly and i share a passion for stationery, especially letterpress. so imagine my delight when i saw this unexpected and incredible birthday gift. letterpress is my absolute fave. i've featured simplesong's blind impression letterpress notecards on more than one occasion, and now i am the happy owner of my own set of cards. there it is, my name, pressed into the soft, thick cover stock. swoon.

i've often said that the community in this blogging, handmade, indie world blows my mind. supportive + friendly + welcoming, creative and inspiring. cheerleaders everywhere for the indie craft and art movement. so many people willing to help, and who genuinely care.
i am so lucky to have found a place here, as i truly believe that i am meant to be doing this, sharing my thoughts, and making + creating with my hands. all these like-minded people, people who i feel i was meant to cross paths with, even though it's not in person. some closer than others, some across oceans, some across the country, and some just across town. these people are my friends, my colleagues. you all know who you are, and i thank you for your part in my handmade life, in my little corner of this community.

molly, your generosity is overwhelming, and your thoughtfulness has touched my heart. i, like you, have the tendency to hang on to beautiful paper, not wanting to use it all up. i promise to try and use them, but they'll be saved for the most special of notes, on select occasions. and one will make it's way into my paper keepsake box, where it will no doubt stay.
thank you.

eco letterpress + affordable invites

just a little interlude from our local fashion week here. had to share an awesome deal on wedding invites for all you brides-to-be out there! more fashion to come tomorrow :)

a couple weeks ago, i received a lovely email from the folks at ajalon invitations, introducing me to their letterpress wedding invitation special.
i am a huge fan of letterpress, and i know full well how expensive a set of invites can run for your wedding. there are alot of stock design offerings from ajalon, and at 398 dollars for one hundred invitations + rsvp cards, this is a much more affordable way of getting your letterpress wedding invites. the special runs till september 30, perfect timing for your winter or spring wedding. i know that not everyone is a designer, and for those people not looking for custom and not going diy with their design, this is an excellent option. one especially great feature of ajalon's invitations is that they're printed on 100% cotton paper [tree-free!] and use soy-based inks. always nice to be friendly to the earth, especially when you're sending out such a pile of invites, no?

paper pops :: some of my old faves

apologies, i'm a little slow getting started this week. i think that one holiday monday + two sick kids + a couple happy surprises threw me for a loop! back to my regular bloggy programming...
last week, i featured five new-to-me vendors from poppytalk handmade's 'paper pops' market. how it is that i managed to remain unaware of them until now, i don't know, but i'm sure glad to have added a few new paper people to my favourites! for today, i'd like to touch upon a few vendors whom i've known of + loved for a long time...
herewith, three of my very own poppytalk paper pops oldies but goodies!

i have loved the designs coming out of sweetbeets' press for some time. i first saw them at one of my favourite local haunts, room6, and it seems that these lovely whimsical designs have been jumping out at me ever since. sweetbeets uses all eco-friendly paper goods, which i love, and is a fellow canadian to boot! keep an eye out for sweetbeets' new line of printable pdf invitations. beautiful designs with a built-in party theme, how great is that? i am happy to say that i have recently 'met' owner/designer lisa online, and she is just as sweet as the name sweetbeets implies.

another in my long list of letterpress faves, sycamore street press [another green company!] is a collaboration of artists working together with founder eva jorgensen, creating striking + beautiful letterpressed goods. their modern number and alphabet posters have been noticed all over the web, but they're too gorgeous not to mention again. just look at those fresh colour combinations + simple eye-catching illustrations. love.

BirdDog Press

i must admit, while checking out the letterpress directory over at felt & wire, i was first drawn to this company by name alone. but upon checking out their work, i found some beauties over at BirdDog Press. i especially love this gorgeous eco-friendly wedding invite. look at the crisp, grass green ink paired with the simple craft-paper brown wrap. so lovely.
